Artist Biography
Zoë Cronin is a Galway based multi-media artist, currently studying in her final year of a bachelor’s degree in Contemporary art. Her interdisciplinary practice is composed of painting, printmaking, collage and embroidery, preferring to build a coherent and singular body of work, which is best described as graphic and delicate. Her work is often semi-autobiographical, generating inspiration from an archive of old family photographs. Cronin’s visual language is minimalistic, subtle and striking, whiles dealing with subjects such as mathematics and the feminine ideal. Drawn to real moments and places that evoke nostalgia, her predilection for a simplistic, colour oriented and graphic visuals, encompasses her work. Similarly, one can feel a notion of female empowerment as she interweaves elements of embroidery into her work. Across all disciplines, her work explores the beauty of raw materials and is personified by bold linear and organic forms, interspersed by a graphic use of colour.
My Sketchbook
Artist Statement
My work explores the translation of memories from an archive of old family photographs. The mediums I use are primarily, painting, printmaking and embroidery. With a subtle minimalistic approach, I deal with the relationship between mathematics and visual art, as well as the ideas of feminist ideology in relation to societal attitudes on nurturing, spirituality, science and technology. My work is a documentation of the fundamental balance seen in every aspect of life, the harmony between masculinity and femininity, alongside the study of geometry in the natural world. Through the use of intricate, graphic lines and the organic nature of the figures, my work creates a striking yet delicate portrait of the world I see.
